It is located in Lianggaoshan Hill, Da’an District, Zigong. Lianggaoshan Sandstone was firstly named by geologists Tan Xichou and Li Chunyu in 1933 based on a suite of sandstones exposed here as an uppermost lithologic stratum of Ziliujing Bed initially. Later it was evidenced that it is actually a suite of sandstone at the bottom of the Middle Jurassic Xiashaximiao Formation. The so-called Lianggaoshan Sandstone here is composed of yellowish grey lithic quartzarenite and quartzarenite with developed cross or wave beddings, indicating a channel deposit in a high-energy environment.
