Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark and Changshan Geopark Become Sister Geoparks

On 15 May 2023, representatives from Changshan National Geopark visited Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark for investigation and exchanges.

At the symposium, the two sides had in-depth exchanges on the application and evaluation of UNESCO Global Geopark, the construction of geopark museum, geological site conservation, fossil display, scientific research and science popularization, publicity and promotion, visibility, management body, talent team construction, etc.

After the symposium, a signing ceremony for establishing sister geoparks was held. Wang Wenwei, Director of the Administrator Center of Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark, and Liu Dongjie, Director of the Management Committee Office of Changshan National Geopark signed a sister-geopark agreement on behalf of the geopark.

Later, the delegation of Changshan National Geopark also visited the Zigong Salt Industry History Museum, Zigong Dinosaur Museum and other scenic areas of Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark to further understand Zigong's main practices in signage system construction, museum building, protection and display of geological site resources.

Changshan National Geopark is located in Changshan County, Zhejiang Province. The geopark has the global boundary stratotype section of the Huangnitang Ordovician Darriwillian Stage and Ordovician paleontological fossil resources. Located in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, the Zigong UNESCO Global Geopark boasts typical stratigraphic sections of the Ziliujing Formation and Shaximiao Formation as well as Jurassic dinosaur fossil resources. Moving forward, the two geoparks plan to engage in comprehensive interactions and collaborations based on the terms of their sister-geopark cooperation agreement. They intend to share knowledge and experiences with one another to simultaneously foster growth and further the advancement of geoparks.
